  Beautiful kites flutter in Bali's skies

Colorful kites of different sizes clouded Bali's skies when participants of the 24th Bali Kite Festival tried their best to outdo each other.

The introduction of stricter kite size regulations and even a failed record-breaking attempt did not stop kite enthusiasts from across Bali amassing at the festival ground in Padanggalak, two kilometers north of Sanur, literally causing most activities in the area to grind to a halt.

The beauty and artistry of Ubud have attracted visitors from all over the world ever since the 1930s, when painters Walter Spies and Rudolph Bonnet first came to this mountain village and made it their home. Finding an abundance of local painting, dance and woodcraft in the traditional style, they founded the Pita Maha, a society with introduced local artists to European techniques. Since that time many more western artists have settled here. Dutchborn Hans Snel and American Antonio Blanco now maintain homes and galleries in Ubud and many Ubud painters -like I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, Ida Bagus Made Poleng and I Gusti Ketut Kobot- have became internationally reknown.
